The Lord of the Rings feature films

So just to prevent people from going nuts, here's my explanation: this is based on the cinematic quality of the theatrical editions from the eyes of a normal audience member - not necessarily a LotR fan. FotR isn't quite S tier because the emotional climax of the movie doesn't have as much weight for first time watchers. Boromir is made too suspicious and his redemption is mostly meaningful thanks to the later movies. Upon rewatching this is an S tier but IMO a movie should work first time. If TT was only Helm's Deep it'd be easy S tier. But ultimately the theatrical cut suffers from the story being too disjointed as nobody from the other main storylines ever mentions Frodo, Sam or the ring. We don't really understand why Aragorn and co have to save Rohan and why it helps the ultimate mission of destroying the ring. RotK is ruined by the extended cut but the theatrical is flawless. Yes the undead army feels a little cheap but it works well enough in the theatrical cut. It's also by far the most emotional of the movies. The battle scene is so good they didn't even need sad music with a montage of kids going to battle like in helm's deep just to get you invested. That should say enough. Unexpected journey: what to say. It's just kinda bland. The main emotional pay off at the end doesn't really work. It oversteps its emotional boundaries with Thorin's suicidal last stand against the pale orc. The idea that we should get on board with this mission so the dwarves can have a home is NOT how the novel approaches it and it's just a very weak motiviation. We need something more immediate like in FotR where the nazgul come to sack the shire. The Gollum scene bumps this one up to C tier for me. Desolation of Smaug just had the best action scenes and the comedic moments weren't as bad as in the other "hobbits". It also felt slightly more authentically emotional like there was actually something at stake. Kinda forgettable still but it's the best of the hobbit movies. Five Armies is F tier because it's not only overly pompous and boring, it's also a complete misreading of the source material. In the books, Bilbo isn't even conscious for most of the battle which should tell you how important the actual battle was to Tolkien.
